Butterfield Trail Scouts Flag Retirement Ceremony
Join the Fort Smith Police Department and Scouts from the Butterfield Trail District for a solemn and respectful Flag Retirement Ceremony, held at the scenic Riverfront Amphitheater.
This ceremony offers a meaningful opportunity to retire unserviceable American flags with honor and dignity, following the principles laid out in Scouting America’s guidance and the U.S. Flag Code.
Flag Retirement Guidelines
Only non-synthetic U.S. flags that are no longer fit for display should be brought (e.g., tattered, faded, torn).
Flags must be properly folded into the triangle shape before the event.
Do not bring synthetic flags (e.g., nylon, polyester), as burning them releases harmful chemicals. These should be disposed of through local VFW or American Legion services instead.
The ceremony will include patriotic reflection, Scout participation, and respectful tribute.
Fire safety protocols will be strictly followed per the Guide to Safe Scouting, including adult supervision and on-site safety equipment.
Who’s Invited
This event is open to the public—Scouts, Scouters, veterans, families, and all community members are welcome to attend and participate.
